Derailing Darlings: a Documentary

Roller derby in Oneonta began in the fall of 2010, when a group of fierce, fun-loving skaters came together with a shared goal: to build a community through sport by creating a space where everyone felt empowered and included.

From that vision, roller derby in Oneonta began.

Rooted in Oneonta’s rich railroad history, the league adopted a railroad themed name that reflected local pride. Our home team, the Derailing Darlings, brought power and precision to the track, while our officials, known as the Rinkertons, kept the action safe, fair, and running on time.

Growing Hill City Rollers

The league’s first year focused on learning the sport, developing skating skills, and building a strong foundation. In 2011, Hill City Rollers hosted its first home bout at Interskate 88, drawing a crowd of over 500 people. That moment confirmed what the league already believed: Oneonta was ready for roller derby.

Proceeds from bouts have supported local charities and organizations through food and blood drives, shelter support, winter coat collections, school programs, and more. We’ve also shown up for the community through parades, festivals, volunteer work, and local events.

From the beginning, giving back has been central to our mission. Supporting Hill City Rollers means supporting the community.

Evolving With the Sport

As the league grew, so did our understanding of the sport. Through travel, clinics, and competition with other leagues, Hill City Rollers continued to develop athletically and organizationally. During this period, the league officially became the Hill City Rollers, embracing a name that reflects both our roots and our identity as a skater-operated organization.

We expanded our referee and non-skating official program, welcomed new recruits, and strengthened our commitment to training, teamwork, and inclusivity. Roller derby is demanding—physically and emotionally—but it builds resilience, confidence, and lifelong connections.

Today

Today, Hill City Rollers remains a skater-operated, grassroots league driven by volunteers, athletes, officials, and supporters who believe in the power of sport to create change. We continue to train new skaters, welcome officials and volunteers, and build a league that reflects the strength and diversity of our community.

Roller derby is challenging. It’s demanding. And it’s incredibly rewarding.

We’re proud of where we started—and excited about where we’re going.
